The Wall Street Journal reports that supermarkets are falling behind when it comes to improving queues at the register and customers are not happy. The line needs to appear to be fair so many companies are switching to one line feeding all cashiers to avoid a wait in any one line. Although adding more employees would also help, most general retailers are looking to simply make it a fair wait, not having others checked out before others that have waited longer. Supermarkets have lagged behind in switching to the one line checkout. Some supermarkets say that shoppers wait for their favorite cashier but most think that supermarkets need to be more responsive to wait in line time.
